How Sky Bet’s Move to Leeds Sparked a Thriving Tech Legacy

In 2010, Sky Betting and Gaming (Sky Bet) made a pivotal move from a small office in Harrogate to the bustling city centre of Leeds. Initially triggered by a dispute with their landlord, this relocation turned out to be a game-changer for the company’s growth and the wider tech scene in Yorkshire.

Former SBG CTO Andy Burton reflects on the move:
“We moved to Leeds sometime in 2010, and that was the one thing that, without a doubt, transformed the company. I insisted our office be no more than 10 minutes from the train station because we wanted to tap into the talent pool of people who could easily commute.” Their new home at Wellington Place positioned Sky Bet perfectly within Leeds’ flourishing tech community.

Since then, the foundations laid by Sky Bet have helped foster a vibrant tech ecosystem, powering teams not only at Flutter (Sky Bet’s parent company) but also at major players like Fanatics and Evoke.

Fifteen years on, the legacy continues as Leeds remains a hotspot for innovation, talent, and growth within the gaming and tech sectors.
